Clarifying myths about clothes & immigration
For some weird reason, most people as soon as they get their immigration visa, go buy heaps of clothes, using up the maximum of their allowed baggage weight as if Australia has no clothes!
Rule #1:
DO NOT BUY CLOTHES AS SOON AS YOU GET YOUR VISA!
Clothes varieties in Australia
Believe me Australia has some great clothes shops, if you're looking for cheap clothes you can find shirts etc for $10, jeans for $20 at shops like Lowes and K Mart and if you're looking for designer brands, Sydney has some of the top designer houses in the entire world!
Even the expensive shops like MYER and David Jones have huge sales twice a year that can reach 70% - 90% off!
Recommendations on what to buy when immigrating
Something I would suggest you should buy though is bed sheets and bedcovers (Manchester) those are expensive here because the Australian weather is not suitable for growing cotton.
Clothes in Australia
You can wear anything you feel like in Australia, some beaches allow you to walk around wearing nothing at all (umm just don't try that in the middle of the city please!). Most Aussies are very laid back and many people go to work wearing flip-flops and shorts and T-shirts, on the other hand some events are special occasions to show off very classy clothes like the Melbourne cup (on that day men and women look like they came straight from the Victorian era with their hats and walking canes and smart suits and elegant dresses!
