Crime in Australia in general

In general Australia is a very safe country; it has a very low crime rate and most of the crimes are either drug related or robberies, very few crimes are homicides or shootings in fact they are so rare that whenever that happens those incidents are featured in the national TV news at 6pm!

Safety in Australian streets

I personally feel much safer walking at night in Australian streets than many other countries, I've never had a bad incident there and neither have any of my friends... yet of course that depends on the suburb, if its something like King's Cross or Redfern in Sydney the chances are that probably you will be mugged.

Women's safety in Australian streets

Harassing women in the streets is practically unheard of no matter how late the time is and Police are fairly reliable in responding to emergencies.

Australian Police

Although Australians are generally laid back and very kind, I would suggest you not assume the same treatment from police officers, they are usually very polite but in a strict disciplinary order. I've noticed that most of the Australians I've met dislike the police force here, they feel they are inefficent and often call police officers "pigs" and other disrespectful umm synonyms .. but personally I think in comparison to other countries they do a great job.
