Driving to the left in Australia
You might or might not know that driving in australia is on the opposite side to most other countries, (steering wheel is on the right).
This is one of the remenants of being so close to great britain, the story goes that in the days of Napoleon Bonaparte, he ordered his cavalry to hold their swords in the left hand thus attacking their enemies (in particular the British) from their exposed side, national pride took care of the rest and when the first few cars were invented in france and britain, the tradition was kept alive.

Safety on Australian roads
Australia has a low car accidents rate, one of the lowest in the world, and the australian government is trying to keep it down by imposing harder laws on who gets their licences, a few years ago they just had a learners licence followed by a full licence, then they complicated it now to become: 1 year on a learners licence, followed by 1 year on a red P, then another year and a half on a green P licence and finally a full licence, each stage of these requires an exam, either driving or computerized
