Using Internet in Australia

No free internet in Australia!!

Yep, many other countries provide free Internet but Australia does not offer it. The only consolation perhaps is that the service quality is very high with almost no down times with most ISP's.

Some of the top Internet Service Providers are Optus, iinet, TPG, and Telstra (but there are hundreds more) and you can choose between a wide variety of plans:

Prepaid dialup:

Only a phone line and a modem is needed, you can buy pre-paid cards from most 7/11 shops and convenience stores and they cost anything between $5 to $100.

Dialup:

Where you sign up with a company and they provide the service and you pay per month, it's very cheap and ideal if you just want to chat to check your email but they are not suitable for downloading large files and you cannot receive or make phone calls when you're online.

Broadband

Broadband is the most expensive and it comes in 2 flavours: ADSL and ADSL2 (which is 24 times faster than ADSL), broadband allows you to connect 24/7 for a standard monthly fee and you can use your phone line at the same time however it requires special modems and is always more expensive than other options.
